San Diego’s premier sushi bar, Sushi Ota, lies along Mission Bay Avenue, between Garnet Avenue and Bunker Hill Street, near America’s Best Value Inn and across from Comfort Inn Mission Bay SeaWorld. Patrons may park on site.
Hours of operation are from 5:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, as well as 11:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Tuesday through Friday, and 5:00 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. on weekends.
The restaurant boasts an extensive menu of Japanese cuisine that’s made it a hot spot among locals. Head here for more selective choices of sushi and sashimi in a variety of prices (Sushi: 2-piece Tuna, $4.00 to Sweet Shrimp, $8.50, Omakase platter, $27.00 Sushi/Sashimi: Ankimo, $6.50 to Aji Tataki, $16.00), as well as hand and cut rolls ($4.00 to $11.00) baked, fried and vegetable dishes (Cucumber Sunomono, $3.50 to Salmon Dynamite, $8.50) soups, salads, wines and beer.
While they offer take-out service, groups (of adults) find this a fun, exciting spot to start out the night. Unfortunately, given the popularity, even parties with a reservation may find themselves waiting to be seated.
Stand-out dishes include Ankimo, O Toro, Salmon Belly, and Tokobushi. Guests highly recommend ordering Omakase (“Chef’s Choice”) to discover treasures not listed on the menu.
