Sand Castle Days San Diego
Every July in San Diego, a sandcastle competition takes place and is known worldwide as the U.S. Open Sandcastle Competition. Artists from all around the country come to create their masterpieces in the sand. The sandcastle event begins on a Friday with a dance hosted at the Imperial Beach Boys and Girls Club. On Saturday, the street festival begins as vendors set up their stalls filled with food and crafts. Musical entertainment is provided from the local arts community and continues all weekend. On Saturday afternoon, a competition is held for the kids. This event draws a huge crowd and visitors stroll up and down the boulevard throughout the day.
The big competition takes place on Sunday when the official U.S. Open Sandcastle Competition begins. This is highly competitive and artists will be jockeying for the title of Master’s Champion. Both amateur and professional carving teams are allowed to participate. The stakes are high with more than $21,000 in cash prizes. Trained representatives are the official judges at the competition and judge all categories. The sand building competition begins at 9 a.m. and concludes at 2 p.m.. The event is free and fun for all ages.
