Birch Aquarium

The Birch Aquarium is a place where you can explore all the things the ocean has to offer. It is located in the Scripps Institution of Oceanography at the University of California San Diego.

The address is 9500 Gilman Drive and it is open every day from 9:00 to 5:00, except on New Year’s Day, Thanksgiving, and Christmas. Prices are $9 for seniors and college students, $12 for adults, $8 for staff and students of UCSD, $8.50 for those from 3 to 17, and children 2 or younger are free. You can park for up to three hours for free.

The aquarium started in 1903 as a place where the public could view the discoveries made by the Marine Biological Association of San Diego. Over time their name was changed to the Scripps Institution of Oceanography and the current aquarium was opened in 1992.

Some of the exhibits are the Hall of Fishes with 60 tanks, There’s Something about Seahorses, and the Art of Deception which shows how sea animals camouflage themselves.

Splash! Cafe is in the aquarium and offers a range of menu items. Some of the offerings are sustainable and/or organic, like fair trade coffee and sandwiches made with meats that have no antibiotics or growth hormones.
